Fixed in Icey (219)

WindowServer memory grows while Ice runs

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#819: “memory leak in WindowServer caused by Ice?”

Problem: After the Ice Bar was shown once, Ice captured the menu bar every 5 seconds forever, which kept WindowServer busy and growing.

Fix: Icey only captures the menu bar while the Ice Bar is visible, and only captures the wallpaper for shapes that draw it. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

Icey takes far fewer captures. A WindowServer leak inside macOS itself can't be ruled out.

The Ice Bar leaves an empty ghost bar when a video goes fullscreen on another display

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#986: “Ice Bar leaves a ghost/visual artifact on the primary display when a video enters fullscreen on a secondary display”

Problem: If a space or display changed while the Ice Bar was opening, for example a video entering fullscreen on another display, an empty bar stayed on screen.

Fix: The Ice Bar now stays closed when the space or display changes while it opens. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Ice stops hiding menu bar items on macOS 27

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#954: “Ice in menu bar not working anymore (MacOS Golden Gate 27)”

Problem: On macOS 27, Ice could no longer hide items, and Screen Mirroring disappeared from the menu bar.

Fix: Icey includes early macOS 27 support: hiding, the Ice Bar and the layout editor work again, and Screen Mirroring stays. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Early macOS 27 support, built from community work for Ice. Please report anything that doesn't work.

Getting Ice working on macOS 27

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#1006: “What got Ice working with PR #995, plus two things to look into”

Problem: Ice didn't work on macOS 27 without the unmerged community pull request jordanbaird/Ice#995 and further fixes.

Fix: Icey includes jordanbaird/Ice#995 and the follow-up fixes this issue describes. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Early macOS 27 support.

Hidden items are shown as always-hidden after macOS Tahoe 26.5

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#946: “MacOS Tahoe 26.5 update broke hidden elements in ice layout”

Problem: After updating to macOS 26.5, every hidden item showed up in the always-hidden section, and items dragged back to Hidden fell back into Always-Hidden.

Fix: When the always-hidden divider ends up on the wrong side, Icey now moves it left of the items that were hidden, and it saves where its dividers are when it quits. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same cause as #702. Not reproduced on 26.5.

Other OneDrive items vanish after you click one of them

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#857: “[Bug]: Multiple identical app icons disappear when one is restored from hidden state (e.g. OneDrive)”

Problem: With three OneDrive accounts, clicking one hidden OneDrive item showed it, but the other two disappeared from the hidden items and couldn't be reached.

Fix: Icey now tells identical items from one app apart by their window, so only the item you click is shown and the others stay in their section. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Not yet tested with several OneDrive accounts.

Ice freezes after running for days

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#838: “[Bug]: it seems to be frozen. I have to quit it and re-launch it to get it to function properly.”

Problem: After a long uptime Ice stopped responding and had to be relaunched.

Fix: Icey prunes its item caches, which grew without bound in Ice. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

Not confirmed by the reporter.

Many bugs and heat

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#830: “[Bug]: So many bugs”

Problem: On macOS 15.7.3 the Mac ran warmer with Ice running.

Fix: Icey listens to mouse events only when a setting needs them, polls less and takes fewer screen captures, so it stays near zero energy impact while idle. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

The report names no other specific bug.

Chinese localization

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#801: “[Feature Request]: 求中文”

Problem: A request for a Chinese translation.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Ice Bar only on displays with a notch

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#797: “[Feature Request]: only on screens with a notch”

Problem: A request to use the Ice Bar on screens with a notch and expand items inline elsewhere.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Language options such as Chinese

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#787: “[Feature Request]: need language option,Chinese for example....”

Problem: A request for a language setting, with Chinese as an example.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Layout order is lost when Ice quits

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#769: “[Bug]: Menu Bar Layout gets reordered when i close the Ice app”

Problem: Item order reset when Ice quit or the Mac restarted.

Fix: Icey now saves where its icon and dividers are when it quits. macOS only saves an item's position when that item is dragged, so the dividers came back at stale positions and items changed sections. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested across many restarts.

Choose the section where new items appear

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#767: “[Feature Request]: Have new menubar items appear in always shown, or customizable”

Problem: A request for new items to appear in the visible section.

Fix: Settings > General > New items appear in: choose Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden. Icey moves items from an app it hasn't seen before to that section once, and leaves them alone after that. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not available on macOS 27, where Icey can't move items yet.

Ice Bar stops working after installing macOS 26

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#742: “[Bug]: I just installed Tahoe in my Mac and ICE is not working as it used to. I am attaching the log report sent back form IOS. Since the principal functionality that stopped work is to have the menu in a separate bar below the menu bar.”

Problem: After installing macOS 26, the Ice Bar below the menu bar stopped working and Ice crashed.

Fix: Icey is built on the macOS 26 code, and the conversion that crashed is gone. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Show on hover triggers in Mission Control

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#714: “[Bug]: Show Ice bar on hover should not trigger in Mission Control view”

Problem: Moving the pointer to the top of the screen in Mission Control opened the Ice Bar or showed the hidden items.

Fix: Icey recognizes when Mission Control is open and doesn't show hidden items on hover or click while it is. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

There is no public way to detect Mission Control. Icey looks for the extra full-display window the Dock shows, measured on macOS 26.5.

Localize Ice

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#712: “[Feature Request]: Localize Ice”

Problem: A request to translate the app's interface.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Show on hover and the Ice Bar misbehave when the menu bar hides automatically

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#708: “[Bug]: Ice Bar and Show on Hover hovering area detection bug when system menu bar is on auto-hide mode”

Problem: With the menu bar set to hide automatically, only the very top edge of the screen showed hidden items, and the Ice Bar or the shown items closed as soon as the pointer moved.

Fix: Icey now treats the whole revealed menu bar as the menu bar, so hover, click and timed rehide work as they do with a menu bar that is always shown. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

On a display other than the one with the Icey icon, only the top edge still counts. Not yet tested with an auto-hiding menu bar.

Ice Bar only on Macs with a notch

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#703: “[Feature Request]: Ice Bar only on Macs with a Notch”

Problem: A request to turn on the Ice Bar only for Macs whose display has a notch.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Hidden items randomly move to the always-hidden section

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#702: “[Bug]: Hidden items randomly moved to always hidden items”

Problem: All hidden items sometimes moved into the always-hidden section at once.

Fix: When the always-hidden divider ends up on the wrong side, Icey now moves it left of the items that were hidden, instead of right next to the hidden divider, which pushed every hidden item into always-hidden. Icey also saves where its dividers are when it quits, so they come back in the same places. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

What puts the dividers in the wrong order in the first place isn't confirmed.

Split menu bar keeps blank space on the left of the right half

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#676: “[Bug]: Empty space on the left side of the right menu bar when split, MacOS Tahoe”

Problem: The split shape's right half reaches further left than the items.

Fix: The right half of the split shape was as wide as every item window on the display added together, counting overlapping windows and items from other displays. It now runs from the right edge to the last item in the row. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested on macOS 26 with this setup.

Clicks at the top of a display without a menu bar trigger Icey

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#646: “[Bug]: Clickable area to activate Ice extends beyond menu bar to blank area of 2nd monitor.”

Problem: With the menu bar shown on one display only, moving the pointer or clicking near the top of the second display activated Ice, and right-clicking there opened Ice's menu.

Fix: With "Displays have separate Spaces" off, Icey now ignores the top of displays that have no menu bar. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Not yet tested on a multi-display setup.

Option-click works randomly

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#644: “[Bug]: <Option-Click works randomly>”

Problem: Option-clicking sometimes didn't show the always-hidden section.

Fix: Option-click and Control-click now look only at Shift, Control, Option and Command, read from the click itself, so Caps Lock or the Fn key no longer turn them into a plain click. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

The Caps Lock and Fn cause comes from the code, not a reproduction.

Split menu bar holds a large blank space

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#608: “[Bug]: Split menu bar holds onto a large amount of blank space to the”

Problem: With the split shape, the right half kept a large blank space to the left of the items, on an external display.

Fix: The right half of the split shape was as wide as every item window on the display added together, counting overlapping windows and items from other displays. It now runs from the right edge to the last item in the row. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested on an external display.

Ice crashes at launch on a macOS 26 beta

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#603: “[Bug]: App launches, then immediately crashes, on macOS Tahoe Beta 3”

Problem: On a 2022 MacBook Pro with a macOS 26 beta, Ice appeared for a split second and then crashed.

Fix: Icey is built on the later macOS 26 code, which no longer has the conversions that crashed. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Crash log is unsymbolicated; matches the same family of crashes.

Ice occasionally crashes

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#563: “[Bug]: Ice occasionally crashes.”

Problem: An unsymbolicated crash in Ice 0.11.12.

Fix: The crash was an empty list in the code that shows a hidden item when Ice couldn't find its divider. Icey checks for that case and doesn't crash. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Traced from the attached crash log against Ice 0.11.12.

Another app's brightness slider keeps disappearing

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#526: “[Bug]: Ice Causing issues with the behaviour of the Motioncontrol Light app. The brights slider keeps disappearing when trying to adjust screen brightness”

Problem: MotionControl Light's brightness slider closed while it was being adjusted, because Ice hid the items again.

Fix: Same fix as #403: dragging a slider in another app's popover no longer hides the items and closes it. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested with MotionControl Light.

Right-clicking a window title on a display without a menu bar opens Ice's menu

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#456: “[Bug]: Ice interferes with right-click on title bar on display where menu bar is not displayed”

Problem: With "Displays have separate Spaces" off, right-clicking a document title or tab near the top of a secondary display also opened Ice's menu, and Ice's "Show on" settings swallowed clicks there.

Fix: Icey now ignores the top of displays that have no menu bar. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Not yet tested on a multi-display setup.

Rehide closes an open item menu

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#452: “[Bug]: Automatically rehide takes affect even when inside a hidden items menu options”

Problem: Automatic rehide hid items while one of their menus was open.

Fix: Timed rehide and show on hover now wait while an item's menu or popover is open below the menu bar, instead of hiding the items and closing it. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

A menu bar app that keeps a window open under the menu bar all the time would also hold rehide off.

"Hide application menus" only works with the always-hidden section on

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#434: “[Bug]: Hide Application Menus doesn't unless Enable always-hidden section is toggled on”

Problem: With the always-hidden section turned off, showing hidden items never hid the application menus, even when the items ran into them.

Fix: Icey now checks the items you just showed against the application menus, so the menus hide when they need to. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Some reports where it also fails with the always-hidden section on have a different cause, tracked in #620 and #879.

Smart rehide closes other apps' popovers

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#403: “[Bug]: Make smart mode smarter: Don't collapse the menu bar icons when toggling switches of switch app”

Problem: Using a switch or slider in another app's menu bar popover closed it, because Ice hid the items.

Fix: Smart rehide now ignores clicks inside menus and menu bar app popovers, so switches and sliders in them stay open. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested with OnlySwitch.

Previous space's wallpaper shown after swiping in Mission Control

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#337: “[Bug]: Menu bar appearance uses wallpaper from previous space when swiping through spaces in Mission Control”

Problem: After swiping to another space in Mission Control, the split or rounded shape showed the previous space's wallpaper.

Fix: Icey uses the wallpaper of the space the display is showing now, captures it again a second after the switch, and waits for Mission Control to close before capturing. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Split shape keeps the previous space's wallpaper

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#336: “[Bug]: Split Type Ice Bar keeps the wallpaper from the previous space when switching spaces/screens”

Problem: With the split shape, switching spaces or screens kept the previous space's wallpaper behind the menu bar.

Fix: Icey uses the wallpaper of the space the display is showing now and captures it again a second after the switch. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Same fix as #337.

Hidden icons can't be shown when the menu bar hides automatically in fullscreen

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#331: “[Bug]: Hidden icons cannot be displayed when menu bar automatically hidden while in full screen”

Problem: With the menu bar hidden automatically in fullscreen, hidden items couldn't be shown from the revealed menu bar.

Fix: Icey now counts the whole revealed menu bar as the menu bar. The shape drawn over fullscreen apps, also mentioned, was fixed in 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Not yet tested with an auto-hiding menu bar.

Show on click and scroll don't work with an auto-hidden menu bar

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#286: “[Bug]: Show on click/scroll not working on non-fullscreen, auto-hidden menu bar”

Problem: With the menu bar set to hide automatically and an app not in fullscreen, clicking or scrolling in the menu bar didn't show hidden items.

Fix: Icey now counts the whole revealed menu bar, not only the screen's top row, so click and scroll work there. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Not yet tested with an auto-hiding menu bar.

Inset shape and Ice Bar too short on notched displays at lower resolutions

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#260: “[Bug]: Both inset menu bar shape and Ice Bar are too short on notched display when set to a lower resolution”

Problem: At scaled resolutions, the inset shape and Ice Bar clipped the icons.

Fix: The inset shape and the Ice Bar now shrink their inset on a shorter menu bar, so they're never shorter than the items. Default resolutions look the same as before. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested at a lower resolution on a notched display.

Ice Bar only on the built-in display

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#223: “[Feature Request]: Ability to enable Ice Bar only when on built-in display”

Problem: A request to use the Ice Bar on the laptop screen only.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Option-click after a click doesn't hide app menus

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#144: “[Bug]: Doing opt click after click does not hide app menus”

Problem: Showing the always-hidden section with Option-click after a click left the app menus in place.

Fix: Icey now waits for the items to move before checking whether they reach the app menus, and checks once more, so Option-click after a click hides the menus. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Adds about 100 ms before the menus hide.

Menu Bar Layout rows are blank on macOS 26.0.1

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#761: “[Bug]: Unable to see icons in Menu Bar Layout Settings”

Problem: On macOS 26.0.1 the Menu Bar Layout sections were plain white rows, and 0.11.13-dev.2 showed "Unable to display menu bar items" instead.

Fix: Icey identifies menu bar items on macOS 26 again, so the Menu Bar Layout pane shows them. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #743 and #679. A commenter said it only happened with "Displays have separate Spaces" turned off. That setup is untested in Icey.

Chinese translation

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#577: “[Feature Request]: <feature title>When can you support Chinese?”

Problem: A request for a Chinese version of the app.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Same as #801.

Chinese language option

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#549: “[Feature Request]: <feature title>语言选项”

Problem: A request for a Chinese version of the app.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Same as #801 and #787.

Option-A stops working while Ice runs

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#498: “[Bug]: App blocking option+a”

Problem: Option-A no longer typed å while Ice was running, because it was saved as the always-hidden section's hotkey while that section was turned off.

Fix: Icey no longer registers the always-hidden section's hotkey while that section is turned off, so its keys type normally again. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.5.

The hotkey recorder is hidden while the section is off. Turn the section on to change or clear the hotkey.

Translate the app into other languages

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#474: “[Feature Request]: Localization”

Problem: A request to translate the interface.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Same as #230.

Menu bar layout isn't remembered after a restart

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#470: “[Bug]: menu bar layout not recalling prior after restart”

Problem: After a restart, items were spread over the wrong sections and had to be arranged again.

Fix: Icey now saves where its icon and dividers are when it quits, and repairs them if they end up out of order, so items come back in their sections. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Upstream closed it as #344. The whole layout changing at once is #769 and #702.

Turn the Ice Bar or hiding off on a large external display

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#465: “[Feature Request]: pause functionality when connected to big screen”

Problem: A request to use Ice only on the notched built-in display, and to show every item on a large external display.

Fix: Settings > Displays has, for each display, Use Ice Bar (Follow, On or Off) and Show hidden items automatically. Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on can also limit the Ice Bar to displays narrower than a width you set. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Covers #223, #299 and #303.

Applying item spacing opens apps twice or crashes them

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#433: “[Bug]: "Menu bar item spacing" randomly starts hidden applications when setting a value”

Problem: Applying a menu bar item spacing restarted apps so that some ran twice or crashed.

Fix: Apply now asks each app to quit and waits up to ten seconds, never force quits your apps, and doesn't start an app again if it is already running. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

#27 also stopped a quit app's old process from counting as running.

Settings window doesn't open

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#375: “[Bug]: Ice Settings window does not show up [OS 18.1 beta 4-5]”

Problem: Choosing Settings from the Ice menu did nothing until Ice was relaunched.

Fix: Settings opens from the Icey menu and the app icon. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

Same as #371, fixed in Ice 0.11.4, which Icey is built on.

Quit apps stay in Menu Bar Layout

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#345: “[Bug]: Closing / Deleting App doesn't remove from Menu Bar Items Section in Ice”

Problem: After quitting or deleting an app, its item stayed in Menu Bar Layout until Ice restarted.

Fix: Icey reads the items again when an app quits, so its item leaves Menu Bar Layout within a few seconds. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

Same as #332, fixed in Ice before Icey.

Multi-language support

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#324: “[Feature Request]: Multi-language support”

Problem: A request to translate the interface, starting with Simplified Chinese.

Fix: Icey is available in German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. macOS picks the language from System Settings > General > Language & Region. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Hidden items don't show when the menu bar hides automatically

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#238: “[Bug]: Ice cannot display menu bar items for automatically hidden menu bars.”

Problem: With the menu bar set to hide automatically, hovering, clicking or scrolling didn't show the hidden items, and right-clicking showed no menu.

Fix: Icey now counts the whole revealed menu bar as the menu bar, so show on hover, click and scroll, and the right-click menu, work when the menu bar hides automatically. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.2.

Same as #331. Not yet tested with a menu bar that hides automatically.

Shown items slide under the app menus

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#124: “[Bug]: Click to reveal hidden items causing the hidden apps to go underneath the app menu bar items”

Problem: Clicking the Ice icon sometimes showed the hidden items underneath the app menus, which weren't hidden.

Fix: Icey now waits for the shown items to move before checking whether they reach the app menus, and activates anyway when macOS refuses, so the menus hide instead of covering the items. Fixed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #60, fixed in Ice. Icey also fixed #144 and #879.

Split shape hides app menus past the notch

Fixedjordanbaird/Ice#104: “[Bug]: Menu Bar Items that overflow past notch not visible in split mode.”

Problem: With the split shape, app menus that continued past the notch were invisible, though they still opened.

Fix: The split shape's left part now covers every app menu on the notched display, including menus past the notch. Fixed in Icey 0.11.12-icey.1.

Same as #103, fixed in Ice before Icey.

Partly fixed (90)

Ice keeps asking for a permission that is already enabled

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#1004: “Unable to proceed past permissions request.”

Problem: System Settings showed Accessibility or Screen Recording as enabled, but Ice still asked for it.

Fix: Icey explains what to do: remove the app from the list in System Settings with the minus button, then add it again. Screen Recording granted while Icey runs now takes effect without a relaunch. The permissions window now also has a link that opens the right System Settings list, where a stale entry can be removed. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

System freeze after long uptime with Ice running

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#908: “Ice appears to have caused system-wide freeze & kernel panic after ~33 hours of uptime”

Problem: A Mac froze after about 33 hours of uptime with Ice running. Ice retried moving an item every 3 seconds forever when it couldn't put it back.

Fix: The crashing code from Ice 0.11.12 is gone. Retries now back off and stop after five rounds, and Icey recovers when its divider reappears. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

The freeze itself hasn't been reproduced.

Clicking just under the menu bar in fullscreen triggers Ice

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#899: “[Bug]: Ice triggering while clicking just under the menu bar in fullscreen”

Problem: In fullscreen, clicking just below the hidden menu bar showed the hidden items.

Fix: The top of a fullscreen display counts as the menu bar only while its menu bar is showing: with the Icey icon on another display, and now also with the Icey icon turned off. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

With the Icey icon on the same display, no cause found.

Ice Bar can't be used after switching windows or spaces

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#888: “[Bug]: Cannot use ice bar when which between windows”

Problem: After switching between fullscreen windows or spaces, the Ice Bar opened empty or not at all, and Ice could freeze until force quit.

Fix: A space change while the Ice Bar opens keeps it closed, stuck moves and clicks time out, and the Ice Bar now opens within a second even when updating its images stalls, instead of never opening again. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Not reproduced.

Ice can't expand on a macOS 26.3 beta

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#865: “[Bug]: macOS 26.3 beta 3 prevents Ice from expanding”

Problem: On macOS 26.2 and the 26.3 betas, clicking the Ice icon expanded nothing, and Ice could stop responding.

Fix: The Ice Bar now opens within a second even if reading the items or their images stalls, and requests to Icey's item helper no longer tie up the threads the rest of the app needs. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

The exact cause in the report isn't known. Please retest.

Black square in the corner of the main display when another display is fullscreen

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#863: “[Bug]: Black square appears in bottom-right corner of primary display when secondary display has fullscreen window”

Problem: With an external display set as primary, a black square appeared in its bottom-right corner while the other display had a fullscreen window.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Menu bar overlay drawn on the wrong display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#858: “[Bug]: second screen layout wrong display”

Problem: With a fullscreen app on the built-in screen, the menu bar appearance was drawn wrongly on the second screen.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Shown hidden items can't be selected

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#845: “[Bug]: Hidden menubar items not selectable”

Problem: Items shown from the hidden section didn't open when clicked on macOS 26.2.

Fix: With Caps Lock on, Icey waited for a key release that never came, so items clicked in the Ice Bar never opened. Caps Lock no longer blocks clicks. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

May not be the reporter's cause; please retest.

Menu bar items don't hide again

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#799: “[Bug]: Menu bar items not disappearing”

Problem: Items shown from the Ice Bar didn't hide again after clicking away.

Fix: Icey no longer mistakes a menu bar item that appears after the click for the item's open menu, which kept it waiting to hide the item forever. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Another menu bar app showed the same problem, so macOS may be involved too.

Ice freezes with multiple monitors

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#790: “[Bug]: Multiple monitors freeze”

Problem: With an external monitor connected, Ice stopped responding to hover and clicks.

Fix: Item captures no longer take the slow path, the Ice Bar no longer waits indefinitely for them, and requests to Icey's item helper on macOS 26 can no longer use up the threads the app needs to respond. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Mullvad VPN's menu appears as items hide

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#766: “[Bug]: App with dropdown from menu bar (Mullvad VPN) appears as it auto-hides”

Problem: Mullvad VPN's window opened by itself when Icey hid its item again after it was shown from the Ice Bar.

Fix: When moving an item, Icey no longer sends an extra mouse release after the item has moved, which apps like Mullvad took for a click. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Cause inferred from the code, not reproduced.

Pointer stays hidden until Ice quits

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#751: “[Bug]: The cursor is not visible after clicking the ICE icon and then selecting a hidden icon from the ICE bar.”

Problem: After clicking the Ice icon and then a hidden item in the Ice Bar, the pointer stayed invisible until Ice was quit.

Fix: Icey now hides the pointer only while each move posts its events, not while it waits for the mouse to stop, so it no longer stays hidden while you move it. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Please retest.

Docker ends up in the always-hidden section over time

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#732: “[Bug]: Docker for Mac ends up in "Always-Hidden Section" over time”

Problem: Docker for Mac's item, and in the comments other hidden items, moved into the always-hidden section over time.

Fix: Same fixes as #702: the dividers keep their places across restarts, and fixing their order no longer empties the hidden section. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

An app that recreates its item while Icey runs uses its own saved position, which Icey doesn't control.

An item opened from the Ice Bar stays in the menu bar for good

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#729: “[Bug]: Menu Bar Item Stuck After Ice Bar Click When Live Activities are Active”

Problem: While iPhone Live Activities were in the menu bar, an item clicked in the Ice Bar stayed in the visible section and never hid again until Ice was restarted.

Fix: After moving a shown item back, Icey now checks that it really is back in its section and moves it there if not. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

The link to Live Activities is inferred from the code.

iPhone notification items can't be moved

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#704: “[Bug]: menu bar items (iphone notifications) cannot be moved”

Problem: Moving an iPhone Live Activity item failed with "took too long to respond".

Fix: When an item never responds to being moved, the alert now says the item didn't move and that some items, such as iPhone Live Activities, may not allow being moved. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Icey still can't move these items. Whether macOS allows moving them is unconfirmed.

Some apps are missing from the layout pane

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#655: “[Bug]: ICE - Some Apps icons not appearing in the Menu Bar Layout setting”

Problem: Some apps' items didn't show in Menu Bar Layout on macOS 15.

Fix: An item touching a divider at a fractional position on a scaled display was in no section and was left out of the layout pane and the Ice Bar. Icey now allows the same small tolerance it uses for moves. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

May not be the reporter's cause; please retest.

Clicking BusyCal in the hidden section opened the Apple menu

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#642: “[Bug]: Clicking on BusyCal Menu in hidden section opened Apple Menu instead”

Problem: Clicking BusyCal in the Ice Bar opened the Apple menu instead, and the Apple menu sometimes opened by itself.

Fix: Icey only clicks an item where it is when the item is on a display. Otherwise it shows the item first, and it never clicks at a point that is off every display. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Fixes the most likely cause. The random Apple menu openings aren't confirmed fixed.

Odd menu bar cutout appears on a connected monitor

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#636: “[Bug]: <bug title> Shows weird bar when connected to monitor”

Problem: With an app fullscreen on the MacBook, a menu bar cutout, sometimes with the notch shape, appeared on the external monitor.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Menu bar appearance not displayed

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#627: “[Bug]: Menu bar appearance not being displayed”

Problem: Menu bar appearance settings had no effect.

Fix: The appearance editor now says when Icey lacks the Screen Recording permission it needs to draw the appearance, links to it, and applies the appearance as soon as it's granted. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

A missing permission is one confirmed way to get this. The report has no other details.

ProtonVPN item clicks itself after being hidden

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#586: “[Bug]: protonvpn app icon presses itself when it hides itself after being opened from ice bar”

Problem: ProtonVPN's item clicked itself when it was hidden again after being opened from the Ice Bar.

Fix: When moving an item, Icey no longer sends an extra mouse release after the item has moved, so hiding it again shouldn't click it. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Same cause as #766. The other report, that clicking it in the Ice Bar didn't open it, isn't addressed.

Menu bar shape appears on the main display during fullscreen video

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#576: “[Bug]: <UI Bar Appearing on Main Display When Playing Fullscreen Video on Extended Display>”

Problem: Playing a video fullscreen on the built-in screen made a bar appear on the main external monitor.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Hidden menu stays visible on widescreen monitors

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#573: “[Bug]: Widescreen Monitors Hidden Menu Always Visible”

Problem: On a widescreen monitor, the hidden section's items stayed visible.

Fix: The split shape's right half no longer stretches across the hidden items. The items themselves still show. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

macOS limits how far a divider can push items to about 5,000 points, which is less than the width of this display.

Clicking app menus triggers Ice

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#567: “[Bug]: Clicking on the menus in some apps triggers Ice”

Problem: Clicking some apps' menus showed hidden items.

Fix: Show on click and show on hover now do nothing while an app's menu is open, so moving between its menus no longer shows the hidden items. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

The first click on a menu title still depends on measuring the app menus.

Different settings with an external monitor

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#555: “[Feature Request]: <Disable / alt settings with external monitor>”

Problem: A request for per-display settings.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Only the Ice Bar can differ per display; other settings can't.

Empty menu bar drawn on an external display with VMware

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#550: “[Bug]: <bug title>With VMWare + Windows 11, ICE shows menu bar in the middle of an external monitor”

Problem: While using a Windows 11 VM in VMware, the external display showed an empty Mac menu bar.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Split view breaks with extended screens

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#541: “[Bug]: Split view broke with extended screens”

Problem: With extended displays, the MacBook's split menu bar shape appeared in the middle of another display.

Fix: An appearance overlay that ends up on another display now hides itself. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same fix as #910. Not confirmed with this display arrangement.

Split shape's right half is too long on an ultrawide display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#529: “[Bug]: The right bar is longer than expected on ultrawide screen”

Problem: On an ultrawide screen, the right half of the split shape was longer than its items.

Fix: The right half of the split shape was as wide as every item window on the display added together, counting overlapping windows and items from other displays. It now runs from the right edge to the last item in the row. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Hidden items can still show on very wide displays (#94).

Split menu bar disabled on macOS 15.3.2

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#525: “[Bug]: split menu bar and related effects seemingly disabled in macOS 15.3.2”

Problem: After a macOS update, the split shape, borders and other appearance effects stopped working.

Fix: The appearance editor now says when Icey lacks the Screen Recording permission it needs to draw the appearance, links to it, and applies the appearance as soon as it's granted. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

macOS updates can make Screen Recording need approving again. Unconfirmed that this was the cause.

Hidden icons end up in the visible section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#513: “[Bug]: Hidden icons end up in the Visible section after some interactions”

Problem: An item opened from the Ice Bar sometimes stayed in the visible section.

Fix: Icey now checks that a shown item is back in its section after hiding it again, no longer waits forever when the item's app adds or recreates a menu bar item on click, and keeps retrying if the item is briefly missing. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Quitting Icey while an item is shown still leaves it visible.

Turn on the Ice Bar automatically per display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#463: “[Feature Request]: Make the "Use Ice Bar" toggle dynamic”

Problem: A request for a dynamic "Use Ice Bar" setting.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

There is no automatic switch based on free space; the display rule covers the common notched laptop plus external display case.

Split shape is wrong with an external display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#359: “[Bug]: Menubars are not correct with external display on MacBook Pro”

Problem: With an external display, the split was too wide on the external display and missing on the built-in one.

Fix: Each display now uses its own application menu and fullscreen state for the split shape. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Not yet confirmed on two displays. Please retest in Icey.

Doesn't work with Focus's menu bar item

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#330: “[Bug]: Can not work with Focus Menu Bar Item (https://heyfocus.com)”

Problem: Focus's popover closed, and the hidden items hid again, as soon as Focus's item was clicked.

Fix: Rehide waits while a menu bar app's popover is open, and clicks inside one don't count as clicks outside, so the popover stays open. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same fix as #403. Reported on Ice 0.10.5 and not retested with Focus.

One OneDrive item disappears when rearranging

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#300: “[Bug]: Rearranging icons with multiple instances of OneDrive”

Problem: With two OneDrive accounts, one OneDrive item sometimes disappeared from Menu Bar Layout while rearranging.

Fix: A section could stay frozen, or an item blank, after a drag. Both now redraw when the drag ends. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Not yet tested with several OneDrive accounts.

AltTab missing from the layout pane

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#283: “[Bug]: Ice's view of the menu bar is missing the icon for AltTab”

Problem: AltTab's item didn't show in Menu Bar Layout on 0.10.3.

Fix: A section of the layout pane could stop updating after an item was dragged out of it, so new items didn't appear. It now catches up when the drag ends. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

May not be the reporter's trigger; please retest.

Menu bar clipped with the split shape

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#239: “[Bug]: Some menu bar clip issue while using Menu bar split shape ”

Problem: The split shape clipped menus near the notch, in fullscreen, and when entering Mission Control.

Fix: Icey no longer draws the appearance over fullscreen spaces, and waits for Mission Control to close before drawing it again. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

The notch case was reported on 0.10.2 and needs retesting.

Dragging items in the Hidden layout pane makes them disappear

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#233: “[Bug]: Re-arranging/dragging items in the "Hidden" settings pane makes them disappear ”

Problem: Rearranging items in the layout pane made them vanish, with separate Spaces per display.

Fix: The pane no longer stays stale after rearranging, which is one way items seemed to disappear. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Possibly a moved item landing in another display's area when that display is to the left. Not confirmed.

Choose where new menu bar items appear

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#6: “[Feature Request] Change the location where new menu bar icons come up.”

Problem: A request to change the location where new menu bar icons show up, instead of the far left.

Fix: Settings > General > New items appear in: choose Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden. Icey moves items from an app it hasn't seen before to that section once, and leaves them alone after that. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

An app that forgets its item's position comes back at the far left each launch; Icey only moves it the first time.

A clicked hidden item stays in the visible menu bar

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#653: “[Bug]: Hidden Menu Bar Icons Persist in Main Bar After Use”

Problem: After clicking a hidden item, it moved into the visible menu bar and never went back to the hidden section.

Fix: Icey no longer mistakes a menu bar item that appears after the click for the item's open menu, checks that a shown item really is back in its section, and keeps retrying if the item is briefly missing. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Same as #799.

Turn the Ice Bar on or off depending on the display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#652: “[Feature Request]: Automatically enable/disable Ice Bar based on screen size or monitor configuration”

Problem: A request to use the Ice Bar only on small screens and turn it off on large external monitors.

Fix: Settings > General > Use Ice Bar > Use on: choose All displays, Displays with a notch, or Built-in display. Other displays show hidden items in the menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #463. There is no screen-size threshold.

New menu bar items always go to the always-hidden section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#572: “[Bug]: Persistent Issue: New Icons Default to "Always Hidden"”

Problem: New items always landed in the always-hidden section, and some items, such as Do Not Disturb, sometimes changed sections on their own.

Fix: Settings > General > New items appear in: choose Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden. Icey also saves where its dividers are when it quits and repairs them if they end up out of order. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #6. Random moves are #702, and system items set to "Show When Active" are #844.

Menu bar shape floats in the middle of the external monitor after fullscreen

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#509: “[Bug]: Ice bar floating in middle of screen after full screening an app”

Problem: With an external monitor and the split or full shape, a copy of the shape appeared in the middle of the screen when an app went fullscreen.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Menu bar shape outline appears on the other monitor in fullscreen

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#484: “[Bug]: <When in full screen, menu bar appears on top monitor>”

Problem: With the full or split shape, an outline of the menu bar appeared on the external monitor while an app was fullscreen on the MacBook.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Bar-shaped artefact on the external display when an app goes fullscreen

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#772: “[Bug]: Searchbar-like Artefact Upon Full-Screen”

Problem: On macOS Tahoe, making a window fullscreen on the built-in display left a bar-shaped artefact over all windows on the external display.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445 and #636. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Menu bar background appears in the wrong place with a second display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#466: “[Bug]: menu background is placed wrong when using a second screem”

Problem: With a second display, the menu bar shape or tint was drawn somewhere on the desktop, such as at the bottom of the screen.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Wi-Fi menu closes when clicking Other Networks

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#464: “[Bug]: Clicking on Other Networks in Wifi settings exits Ice Bar Menu”

Problem: After opening Wi-Fi from the hidden items and clicking Other Networks, the menu closed and the items were hidden again.

Fix: A click inside a shown item's menu or panel no longer counts as a click outside the menu bar, so smart rehide doesn't close it while it is in use. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same fix as #621. Not tested with the Wi-Fi menu, and not reproduced with the Ice Bar.

Can't arrange items when the menu bar hides automatically

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#458: “[Bug]: <ice cannot arrange menubar items in automatically hidden menu bars>”

Problem: Menu Bar Layout showed an error instead of the items when the menu bar was set to hide automatically.

Fix: Icey no longer blocks Menu Bar Layout, the Ice Bar or the appearance editor when the menu bar hides automatically. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Upstream closed it as #201. Not yet tested with a menu bar that hides automatically.

New items go to the always-hidden section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#457: “[Feature Request]: <Newly installed apps should have their icon put into the "Always visible" group, not into "always hidden">”

Problem: Newly installed apps put their item in the always-hidden section, where it was hard to find.

Fix: Settings > General > New items appear in: choose Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden. Icey moves items from an app it hasn't seen before to that section once, and leaves them alone after that. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #6. An app that forgets its item's position comes back at the far left each launch, and Icey only moves it the first time.

Split shape shows on the other display after a full screen app

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#442: “[Bug]: Multiscreen setup when full screen app on 1 screen, the ice cutout display on other screen”

Problem: With two displays, entering a full screen app on one showed a cutout of the split shape on the other.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

New items go to the always-hidden section by default

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#428: “[Feature Request]: Do not Put New Apps to the Always-Hidden Section by Default”

Problem: Every newly launched app's item appeared in the always-hidden section.

Rendering glitch on an external display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#427: “[Bug]: rendering issue”

Problem: Bars of the menu bar appearance were drawn in the wrong place on an external display, covering part of a window.

Fix: An appearance overlay that lands on another display now hides itself, and each display uses its own fullscreen state. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #445. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

CleanShot X moves itself to the visible section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#419: “[Bug]: I run the app CleanShotX and at least once a day Ice moves the icon from hidden to visible”

Problem: CleanShot X's item moved from the hidden to the visible section at some point each day, or after the app was reopened.

Fix: Icey now checks that an item opened from the hidden items is back in its section after hiding it again, and keeps retrying if the item is briefly missing. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Same as #513 when the item was opened from the Ice Bar. Upstream closed it as #344.

Choose where new menu bar items appear

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#400: “[Feature Request]: Add a way to control where new menu bar items show up”

Problem: A request for a marker, like Bartender's, that sets where new items appear.

Hidden items appear under an app's menu on their own

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#394: “Ice posts below drop down menu and stays, until clicked in an open area of the menu bar, BRAVE Browser+ other apps”

Problem: While using Brave, Mail or Preview, the hidden items showed up below an open app menu and stayed until the menu bar was clicked.

Fix: Show on click and show on hover now do nothing while an app's menu is open, so moving between its menus no longer shows the hidden items. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #567. The first click on a menu title still depends on measuring the app menus.

Hidden items appear under Mail's menu

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#391: “Ice posts below drop down menu and stays, until clicked in an open area of the menu bar, Apple Mail + other apps”

Problem: In Mail, the hidden items showed up directly below an open app menu.

Fix: Show on click and show on hover now do nothing while an app's menu is open, so moving between its menus no longer shows the hidden items. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #567. The first click on a menu title still depends on measuring the app menus.

Put new items in the visible or hidden section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#388: “[Feature Request]: Option to allow new icons to be placed in visible/hidden section by default”

Problem: A request for a setting that puts new items in the visible or hidden section instead of the always-hidden one.

Problem: A request for a setting that picks the section for new menu bar items.

Ice Bar doesn't open

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#274: “[Bug]: Ice Bar doesn't open on MacOS 15”

Problem: Clicking the Ice icon didn't open the Ice Bar, and Menu Bar Layout showed no items.

Fix: A space change while the Ice Bar opens keeps it closed, stuck moves and clicks time out, and the Ice Bar now opens within a second even when updating its images stalls, instead of never opening again. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.4.

Same as #888. Not reproduced.

Option-click doesn't show the always-hidden section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#271: “[Bug]: 'Always-hidden section can be toggled' setting isn't honored”

Problem: Option-clicking an empty part of the menu bar didn't show the always-hidden items.

Fix: Option-click now looks only at Shift, Control, Option and Command, so Caps Lock or the Fn key no longer turn it into a plain click. The always-hidden section can always be shown, so the old setting for that is gone. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #644. The reporter's problem went away after a restart, so the cause is not confirmed.

Use Icey when the menu bar hides automatically

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#262: “[Feature Request]: full working when menu bars are hidden in OS.”

Problem: Ice said it couldn't work with a menu bar that hides automatically.

Fix: Icey no longer blocks Menu Bar Layout, the Ice Bar or the appearance editor when the menu bar hides automatically, and show on hover, click and scroll work on the revealed menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.6.

Upstream closed it as #201. Not yet tested with a menu bar that hides automatically.

Ollama's item doesn't show while Icey runs

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#202: “[Bug]: Ollama icon doesn't show”

Problem: Ollama's item didn't appear while Ice was running, and came back when Ice quit.

Fix: Settings > General > New items appear in: choose Visible, Hidden or Always-Hidden. Icey moves items from an app it hasn't seen before to that section once, and leaves them alone after that. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.3.

Same as #6. macOS puts a new item at the far left, which was the always-hidden section, and drops items that don't fit beside the notch (#589).

Choose the section for new menu bar items

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#197: “[Feature Request]: Option to automatically add new menu bar items to "always hidden", "hidden", or "visible" section ”

Problem: The reporter asked for new items to go to a chosen section automatically.

Split shape is broken with an external display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#152: “[Bug]: Broken shaped bar on a Macbook with external monitor combination”

Problem: On a MacBook with an external display, the split shape was drawn wrongly.

Fix: Each display now gets its own appearance overlay sized to its menu bar, and uses its own application menu and fullscreen state for the split shape. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #97 and #359. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

Choose where new menu bar items appear

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#147: “[Feature Request]: Default behavior of new items”

Problem: New items always went to the always-hidden section, with no setting to change it.

Menu bar shape shows over fullscreen games

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#130: “[Bug]: Doesn't hide menubar in Full Screen mode, like in World of Warcraft.”

Problem: With rounded menu bar shapes, the shape stayed over fullscreen games such as World of Warcraft and over Keynote presentations.

Fix: Icey no longer draws appearance overlays on fullscreen spaces, and hides them while the frontmost app hides the menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #140. Apps with their own fullscreen mode are covered when they hide the menu bar. Not tested with World of Warcraft.

Split shape glitches on an external display

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#102: “[Bug]: Visual glitch in split menubar on external display”

Problem: With the split shape, the appearance glitched on the external display when a window came close to the menu bar.

Fix: Each display now gets its own appearance overlay sized to its menu bar, and uses its own application menu and fullscreen state for the split shape. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #97 and #359. Not yet confirmed on two displays.

VLC fullscreen doesn't cover the menu bar

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#63: “[Bug]: fullscreen in VLC does not cover menubar properly”

Problem: VLC's fullscreen video left the menu bar appearance visible until the pointer moved over it.

Fix: Icey no longer draws appearance overlays on fullscreen spaces, and hides them while the frontmost app hides the menu bar. Addressed in Icey 0.11.13-dev.2-icey.1.

Same as #140. VLC's own fullscreen is covered when it hides the menu bar, which is not tested. Turning on VLC's native fullscreen mode avoids it.

New items don't show while Icey runs

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#57: “[Bug]: Newly started applications are not discovered”

Problem: A newly started app's item didn't appear until Ice quit.

New items go to the always-hidden section

Partly fixedjordanbaird/Ice#17: “New apps come in Always Hidden section”

Problem: With the always-hidden section on, new items appeared in it.

Games lose focus while Ice runs

Openjordanbaird/Ice#658: “[Bug]: <Getting focused out while playing league>”

Problem: A fullscreen game lost keyboard focus while Ice was running.

Status: Not fixed yet.

One candidate, not confirmed: showing hidden items with "Hide application menus" on makes Icey the active app.

Split menu bar moves when showing the desktop

Openjordanbaird/Ice#649: “[Bug]: split menu bar weird behavior when showing the desktop”

Problem: Clicking the wallpaper to show the desktop slid the split shape away with the windows.

Status: Not fixed yet.

On macOS 26.5 the overlay stays in place in Show Desktop. Same trade-off as #514.

Menu bar shadow moves with App Exposé

Openjordanbaird/Ice#514: “[Bug]: Menu bar shadow issue with single application window”

Problem: The menu bar shadow moved during the App Exposé animation.

Status: Not fixed yet.

Keeping the overlay in place also draws it on top of Mission Control and App Exposé (measured on macOS 26.5), so that isn't a fix.

Display Zoom jumps around while Ice runs

Openjordanbaird/Ice#486: “Zoomed-in part of the screen sometimes jumps around when macOS Display Zoom is active (while running Ice)”

Problem: With Zoom on, the zoomed area jumped when Icey moved items in the background.

Status: Not fixed yet.

Moves post mouse events at the item's position, so the pointer jumps and Zoom follows it. A fix means pausing background moves while Zoom is on.

Gap in menu bar items on the inactive display

Openjordanbaird/Ice#241: “[Bug]: Gap in menu bar items on inactive display when showing hidden section”

Problem: With section dividers turned off, a gap showed where the divider is on the other display.

Status: Not fixed yet.

Icey shrinks only the divider's own window. The copy macOS draws on other displays probably keeps its old width.

Icons aren't hidden on an ultrawide screen

Openjordanbaird/Ice#94: “[Bug]: Icons not hidden in ultra wide screen”

Problem: On a very wide display, hidden icons stayed visible because Icey only pushed them part of the way off screen.

Status: Not fixed yet.

macOS stops a divider at about 5,000 points. Hiding more needs a second spacer item.

Hidden items show on a 57 inch ultrawide monitor

Openjordanbaird/Ice#523: “[Bug]: Hidden Items shown by menu bar on 57in monitor”

Problem: On a Samsung G9 57 inch monitor, the first hidden items showed next to the visible items.

Status: Not fixed yet.

Same as #94 and #573. macOS stops a divider at about 5,000 points, which is less than this display's width.

Menu bar clicks are dropped

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#755: “[Bug]: Dropped menubar clicks”

Problem: Some clicks on menu bar items did nothing while Ice was running.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

The reporter says other menu bar managers have it too. Icey's monitors only listen and don't block events.

"Event operation timed out" errors

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#746: “[Bug]: Event operation timed out”

Problem: Every move failed with "Event operation timed out" on a macOS 26.1 beta.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Icey's move code retries up to 8 times with growing timeouts. Please retest.

Strange rendering issue

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#733: “[Bug]: Strange rendering issue”

Problem: Showing hidden items on hover sometimes left a partly drawn, pixelated menu bar.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

No code cause found.

Game Mode item can't be hidden

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#718: “[Bug]: Cannot hide its icon when using game mode”

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

The Game Mode item is a system item.

Problem: Live Activity items couldn't be moved between sections on macOS 26.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Same as #704. The alert now explains that the item didn't move. Needs the item's details from Icey's log to tell whether macOS blocks moving it.

Pointer behaves strangely after clicking a hidden icon

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#640: “[Bug]: Strange Mouse Behavior After Clicking Hidden Icon”

Problem: After clicking a hidden item on a macOS 26 beta, the pointer stayed an arrow everywhere until restart.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Quitting Ice didn't fix it and Bartender showed the same thing, which points to a macOS beta bug.

Hidden bar is oversized

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#625: “[Bug]: Oversize hidden bar”

Problem: The Ice Bar was much wider than its few items.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

The blank stretch suggests another app's expanded spacer item (for example Hidden Bar) in the hidden section.

Layout icons disappear after using the Ice Bar in fullscreen

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#623: “[Bug]:Icons in MenuBar Layout page Disappear After Using ICE Bar in Full-Screen Mode”

Problem: Icons in Menu Bar Layout went blank after using the Ice Bar in a fullscreen app.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Failed captures don't remove cached images, so the cause is elsewhere.

Ice Bar leaves an artifact when auto-hiding in fullscreen

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#606: “[Bug]: Ice bar does't leaves artefact behind when auto-hiding in full screen”

Problem: A leftover image stayed on screen after the Ice Bar closed in a fullscreen app.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

The Ice Bar already closes when the menu bar slides away.

Ice freezes and windows get out of sync

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#512: “[Bug]: Lack of sync among windows”

Problem: Icey froze and its show/hide state got out of sync after toggling it on several desktops.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

The out-of-sync state looks like a result of the freeze. Icey's hang fixes may help. Please retest.

Hidden items show no images

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#485: “[Bug]: Cannot show any menu bar items in hidden section”

Problem: The hidden section sometimes showed no item images.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Icey already throws away blank captures and shows "Unable to display menu bar items" instead.

Ice conflicts with Alcove

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#480: “[Bug]: Interaction with Alcove”

Problem: Alcove's notch stopped reacting to hover while Ice was running.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Icey's overlay panels ignore mouse events and its hover monitor only listens, so no cause was found in the code.

Item spacing doesn't apply

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#472: “[Bug]: Menu bar item spacing not applying correctly”

Problem: Changing item spacing had no effect.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Problem: Gaps appeared between menu bar items on an iPad Sidecar display.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

No code cause found. The spacing looks like macOS on Sidecar.

Moved items look dimmed

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#194: “[Bug]: Offscreen items are dimmed in interface after being moved”

Problem: Items looked dimmed in the layout pane after moving them.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Likely macOS leaves an off-screen dragged item dimmed until the next drag.

Hidden apps' global shortcuts stop working on macOS 26

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#591: “[Bug]: macOS 26: Hiding an icon handicaps that app's features”

Problem: On a macOS 26 beta, apps whose items were hidden stopped responding to their global shortcuts until the hidden items were shown again.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Icey only moves hidden items off screen. The Dock icon that shows when items are shown is #906 ("Hide application menus").

Menu bar shape setting doesn't work

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#559: “[Bug]: <bug title> ShapeKind is not working”

Problem: The report said the shape setting did not work but gave no details.

Closedjordanbaird/Ice#491: “"Search menu bar items" (command palette) lists "always-hidden" items, but nothing happens when you activate them (by pressing Enter)”

Problem: Pressing Enter on an always-hidden item in the search panel did nothing.

Status: Closed: no cause found in Icey's code, and not reproduced. Open an issue in Icey if it still happens, and it will be reopened.

Search shows always-hidden items the same way as hidden ones, and that path was reworked in #513 and #729.

What to do: The app recreates its item, and macOS puts new items at the far left, in the leftmost section. Move it back in Menu Bar Layout. Remembering each item's place is a feature request (#548, #26).

Same as #344. With the always-hidden section turned off, the leftmost section is the hidden one.

Icey appears in the Dock when showing items on a second display

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#219: “[Bug]: Click menu bar show/hide button on the secondary monitor will cause Ice icon appears in task bar”

Problem: Showing the hidden items on the MacBook's display, with an external display attached, put the Ice icon in the Dock until they were hidden again.

What to do: This comes from "Hide app menus when showing menu bar items": Icey must become the active app for a moment, which shows its Dock icon. Turn that setting off in Settings > Advanced, or use the Ice Bar.

Same as #906.

macOS keeps asking to allow screen recording

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#170: “[Bug]: MacOS 15 Privacy Popups”

Problem: On macOS 15, an alert asking to allow Ice to keep recording the screen came back again and again.

What to do: macOS 15 asks again from time to time for apps that record the screen, and Icey can't turn that off. Screen Recording is optional in Icey, needed only for the menu bar appearance and images of items, so you can leave it off.

Icey captures item images with the older capture API because ScreenCaptureKit can't capture hidden items.

Hidden items are covered by the notch

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#158: “[Bug]: Hidden menu items covered by MacBook Pro notch”

Problem: On a MacBook with a notch, shown hidden items ran into the notch and couldn't be reached.

What to do: macOS drops items that don't fit beside the notch. Turn on Settings > General > Use Ice Bar to show hidden items below the menu bar instead.

Same as #1 and #589.

Dropbox's item disappeared

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#151: “[Bug]: Dropbox icon disappeared”

Problem: Dropbox's item disappeared from the menu bar.

What to do: The app recreates its item, and macOS puts new items at the far left, in the leftmost section. Move it back in Menu Bar Layout. Remembering each item's place is a feature request (#548, #26).

Same as #344. Show the always-hidden section to find it.

Zoom and 1Password move to the always-hidden section after a restart

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#150: “[Bug]: Apps move from visible to always hide after restart”

Problem: Zoom and 1Password moved from the visible to the always-hidden section after every restart.

What to do: The app recreates its item, and macOS puts new items at the far left, in the leftmost section. Move it back in Menu Bar Layout. Remembering each item's place is a feature request (#548, #26).

Same as #344.

Menu bar shape appears late when switching spaces

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#136: “[Bug]: Custom menu bar shape is redrawn when switching between Spaces”

Problem: After switching spaces, the menu bar showed its normal look for a moment before the shape appeared.

What to do: Expected: the appearance follows the active space and fades in.

Same as #58.

Docker's item goes missing

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#133: “[Bug]: Icons go missing”

Problem: Docker's item, moved to the visible section, was gone after a few restarts.

What to do: The app recreates its item, and macOS puts new items at the far left, in the leftmost section. Move it back in Menu Bar Layout. Remembering each item's place is a feature request (#548, #26).

Same as #344. Docker recreates its item, so look in the always-hidden section.

A test issue

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#131: “TESTING THE USE OF ISSUE TO MAKE A REQUEST”

Problem: This was a test of the issue form.

What to do: Nothing to fix.

Icey appears in the Dock when showing hidden items

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#128: “[Bug]: Dock Ice App Icon Always Shows When Expanding Menu Bar”

Problem: Ice's Dock icon appeared while the hidden items were shown and went away when they were hidden.

What to do: This comes from "Hide app menus when showing menu bar items": Icey must become the active app for a moment, which shows its Dock icon. Turn that setting off in Settings > Advanced, or use the Ice Bar.

Same as #906.

Stage Manager switches when clicking the Icey icon

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#123: “[Bug]: Stage Manager interacts poorly with Ice”

Problem: With Stage Manager on, clicking the Ice icon made the focused app lose focus.

What to do: With Settings > Advanced > Hide app menus when showing menu bar items on, Icey becomes the active app for a moment to hide the menus, so the focused app loses focus and Stage Manager reacts. Turn that setting off, or use the Ice Bar, which doesn't take focus.

Same cause as #906. Not tested with Stage Manager.

Dato's upcoming event item disappears

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#119: “[Bug]: Dato.app "upcoming event" status item disappears”

Problem: Dato's upcoming event item disappeared while Ice was running.

What to do: The app recreates its item, and macOS puts new items at the far left, in the leftmost section. Move it back in Menu Bar Layout. Remembering each item's place is a feature request (#548, #26).

Same as #344 and #395.

Always-hidden items are gone for good

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#117: “"always hidden objects" for ever lost”

Problem: The always-hidden items couldn't be shown any more, even after removing Ice.

What to do: Bartender was still running and hiding the items. Quit and remove other menu bar managers before using Icey.

Dragging an item shows the section dividers

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#112: “[Bug]: Moving icons cause the section dividers to appear”

Problem: With the dividers hidden, Command-dragging an item showed them, which shifted the items.

What to do: Turn off Settings > Advanced > Show all sections when ⌘ Command + dragging menu bar items. Menu Bar Layout in Settings arranges items without showing the dividers.

A new app icon

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#90: “New app icon ”

Problem: The reporter suggested a new app icon.

What to do: Nothing to fix. Icey has its own app icon, and Settings > General > Icey icon lets you choose the icon in the menu bar.

Tint doesn't make the menu bar black

Not a bugjordanbaird/Ice#50: “[Bug]: Menu Bar Appearance”

Problem: Setting a solid black tint only darkened the menu bar slightly.

What to do: The tint is a translucent layer over the menu bar, so it can darken or color it but not replace its color. A fully colored menu bar is a feature request (#82).

Problem: A request to distribute the app through the App Store for the extra review.

Status: Not planned. Icey can't run in the App Store sandbox, so it ships as a signed and notarized download from GitHub releases.

The app is built without the App Sandbox (ENABLE_APP_SANDBOX = NO).

Put new menu bar items in the Ice Bar

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#689: “[Feature Request]: option to add new menu items to the IceBar”

Problem: A request to send new menu bar items to the Ice Bar instead of the menu bar, where they can end up behind the notch.

Status: Icey has this. In Settings > General > New items appear in, choose Hidden or Always-Hidden, and with Use Ice Bar on those items show in the Ice Bar.

Icey moves items only from an app it hasn't seen before. A new build of an app it already knows is not moved.

Keep the place of items that only appear while their app is open

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#548: “[Feature Request]: Keep icons which are only enabled while app is open shown!”

Problem: A request to put Figma's item back in its place each time the app opens, instead of at the end.

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#455: “[Feature Request]: Random play wallpaper support enhance”

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#438: “[Feature Request]: Hide mouse cursor behind the notch without triggering the menu bar”

Problem: A request to move the pointer behind the notch in a full screen app without the menu bar appearing.

Problem: The reporter asked for a gradient that turns black around the notch.

Status: Not started. The tint is drawn as a translucent layer over the menu bar, so it can only darken it. Pull requests welcome.

Same as #82.

Double-click to show the always-hidden section

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#33: “Double click for the "Always Hidden" section”

Problem: The reporter asked for double-clicking the menu bar to show the always-hidden items again.

Status: Available: Option-click an empty area of the menu bar (with Show on click on) or the Icey icon to show the always-hidden section, or set a hotkey in Settings > Hotkeys.

Move the menu bar shape away from the screen edges

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#32: “[Feature Request] Move menu bar away from screen edges”

Problem: The reporter asked to inset the split shape from the screen edges, as Bartender does.

Status: Not started. Only the inset shape on notched screens is available, in Menu Bar Appearance > Use inset shape on screens with notch.

Same as #547.

Different tint in light and dark mode

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#27: “[Feature Request] Change menubar tint depending on light/dark mode.”

Problem: The reporter asked for a dark tint in dark mode and none in light mode.

Status: Available: Menu Bar Appearance > Use dynamic appearance applies different settings in light and dark mode.

Feature requestjordanbaird/Ice#16: “[FR] Support macOS 12+”

Problem: The reporter asked for support for macOS 12.

Status: Not planned. Icey needs macOS 14 or later, because it relies on APIs that older versions don't have.

Same as #49.
